A Slice Of My Life

I went to Nelson Street School. I was born at 12 Naylor Street, just near Royle's Bridge. It's a field now, at the back of the Navigation. My nephew used to keep that pub.

I'll be ninety on Christmas Day. Before I went to school, at 14 years of age, I used to go to the pawn shop for four people in Naylor Street. 1 went to Burbeck's pawnshop in North (or was it South?) Porter Street, for people that you wouldn't dream would owe money. It was on the other side, near Stony Brew. Near the Arches.

Do you remember Bella Nixon? My grandma washed for her. Her husband took his overalls off on Friday nights, after working down the pits. Do you remember those granddad collars? Well he had those on his shirts. She'd scrub and scrub and scrub to get them clean.

My grandma and granddad lived on Holland Street. There were five houses up five or six steps and a little toffee shop. My granddad used to put a rat catcher on the landing every night and you could guarantee there'd be a rat in it from the canal, next morning. Sadly, I've seen about five drownings in that canal, where the children have been playing or bathing, in the water.
